  5. Until 1988 the hospital ran St Mary's Hospital Medical School, part of the federal University of London. In 1988 it merged with Imperial College London, and then with Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1997 to form Imperial College School of Medicine.

  6. 1854 - St Mary's Hospital Medical School established. St Mary's Hospital was opened in 1851 by Samuel Lane, surgeon and anatomist, and from its inception was intended to be a teaching hospital. The Medical School was founded in 1854, with the number of students soon rising to 40.

  7. In August 1988, St Marys Hospital Medical School became the fourth constituent college to merge with Imperial College London. Prof Peter Sever Professor Sever was a Cambridge graduate who completed his clinical training at St Mary's.
