The Military Academy was a military and political school founded by Sun Yat-sen in 1924 with the help of the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communist Party. Sun Yat-sen was the director, Jiang Zhongzheng was the principal, and Liao Zhongkai was the party representative.

It was founded by the Republic of China as the Whampoa Military Academy at Huangpu (Whampoa), Guangzhou in 1924. At the end of the Chinese Civil War the academy evacuated to the island of Taiwan and took its current name. Its graduates participated in the Northern Expedition, the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War.
Whampoa Military Academy was pivotal to the development of modern Chinese army and navy. The restored former site, although quite distant from downtown Guangzhou, offers a glimpse of the life of the military cadre. The narrative, largely in Chinese only, heavily favors the communists though.
