Monsignor John J. Bonner, the school's namesake, was the Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 1926 to 1945. He is credited with establishing the Philadelphia Catholic League and was one of the best-known Catholic educators in the country.
More commonly known as Bonner, the all boys Catholic high school was named after Reverend Monsignor John J. Bonner. Monsignor Bonner was born in Philadelphia on November 2, 1880. In 1908, he entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and began studying at the North American College in Rome .
According to the American Catholic Historical Society, “Monsignor Bonner was the best-known Catholic educator in the country.” Among his achievements in his nineteen-year tenure as superintendent were the increase in the number of tuition-free diocesan high schools from three to twelve and the founding of the Philadelphia Catholic League.
