Commissioned by Catherine the Great, it was created by the French sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet. The statue influenced a 1833 poem of the same name by Alexander Pushkin, which is widely considered one of the most significant works of Russian literature. The statue is now one of the symbols of Saint Petersburg.

It is a Baroque sculpture showing a helmeted but otherwise naked youth riding bareback on a wildly contorted stallion that recoils from some unseen danger. The crouching stance of the horse, with its hind hooves placed directly below the neck and head, assures the equilibrium of the statue.
