He led a Dixieland jazz band of his own formation from 1949, and his sidemen variously included George Shearing, Colin Bailey, Tommy Whittle and Kenny Ball. Phillips's first recordings under his own name were made in 1928, and he continued to record as a leader into the 1970s.
English jazz clarinetist, baritone saxophone player and arranger. Born June 14, 1907 in London, England, died May 24, 1973 in Chertsey, England. First recorded along with his brothers Harry and Ralph for Vox in 1924 as a teenager as part of the Riverians Orchestra.
