It is Gilbert's second solo album, released posthumously in 2000. The album was first released in 2000 as a limited edition and later as a conventional jewel-case CD. Remasters were published in 2008, 2011 (as a limited edition box set), [2] and 2022, marking the final remaster to appear in print.

Spock's Beard drummer Nick D'Virgilio filled in the gaps with his own multi-instrumental skills. The result is quite possibly the greatest indictment of the music business ever created. The Shaming of the True is the album that Bill Hicks might have championed, had he too not died far too early.

After Gilbert's death in 1996, D'Virgilio was asked by Gilbert's estate to complete his second solo album, The Shaming of the True, based on the extant tapes and Gilbert's notes. Shaming was released posthumously in 2000 and has D'Virgilio on many tracks contributing drums, percussion, bass, guitar, keyboards and backing vocals.
