The namesakes of the former Bonds-Wilson High School, Dr. J. R. Bonds and John T. Wilson are described by their former students as dignified gentlemen. Dr. Bonds graduated from South Carolina State College and began teaching in 1927.

Archival history of the men are kept in the massive archives of the Avery Research Center in downtown Charleston. Bonds-Wilson High School opened in the 1940's, and served as an all black school during segregation.
