James Columbus " Jay " McShann (January 12, 1916 – December 7, 2006) was an American jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, and bandleader. He led bands in Kansas City, Missouri, that included Charlie Parker, Bernard Anderson, Walter Brown, and Ben Webster .

The Blues, Kansas City style, was its forte. In Walter Brown and Jimmy Witherspoon it had two of the best shouters in the business. The rhythm section, tightly swinging, urged on both singers and the driving front line alike; this was a band that always sounded bigger than it was.
