Jack Pettis represents one of the great jazz reed musicians to come out of the Jazz Age 1920’s. He was there at jazz’s beginnings playing hot jazz as the style was being developed from its birth and into a mature form.
"Bugle Call Rag", also known as "Bugle Call Blues", is a jazz standard written by Jack Pettis, Billy Meyers and Elmer Schoebel. It was first recorded by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings in 1922 as "Bugle Call Blues", although later renditions as well as the published sheet music and the song's copyright all used the title "Bugle Call Rag".
American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and songwriter. Born 10 February 1902, Ehrmandale, Vigo County, Indiana, USA. Died 24 August 1963, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. Pettis was a member of Friar's Society Orchestra, which first recorded in 1922, and was renamed New Orleans Rhythm Kings in 1923.

Jack Pettis was a pre-swing jazz pioneer. He disappeared from the music scene in 1940, and it became a mystery why he never heard from again. Many jazz enthusiasts did extensive research and have not been able to find out much about his life after his death.
