The band started as a collaboration between guitarists Kim Shattuck and Melanie Vammen, both former members of the 1980s all-female hard rock group, The Pandoras. The Muffs started performing and recording after the addition of bassist Ronnie Barnett and drummer Criss Crass.

For Vammen, she continues celebrating the enduring legacies of Shattuck and Pierce while continuing to play with her Pandoras band mates. Despite the lineup shuffles, seemingly missed career opportunities, and tragic losses, she regathered The Pandoras alumni and launched The Tigerellas in 2022.
Pierce's fresh, new line-up of The Pandoras included Melanie Vammen on keyboards, Julie Patchouli on bass, and Karen Blankfeld on drums. Momentum began picking up with the release of the Hot Generation single on Bomp!
