  1. In 1976 the National Trust listed East Sydney Technical College on the National Trust Register including walls, gates, cellblocks and other buildings. In 2021, the site was added to the NSW Heritage Register, recognising the historic importance of the former gaol and art school to Sydney and NSW.

  2. With its origins in the formation of Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts in 1843, NAS has been in operation on the historic Darlinghurst Gaol site in East Sydney in various forms since 1922 and was formerly part of East Sydney Technical College, known as East Sydney Tech.

  4. It moved to its present site in 1922 as the art department of East Sydney Technical College (ESTC), from which the National Art School was formed. The bulk of the work in the NAS Archive and Collection consists of paintings and drawings collected from students since 1922 when the art school first operated in Darlinghurst.
