Nach der Auflösung von Rodriguez begann Ward seine Solokarriere, unterstützt durch Howe Gelb von Giant Sand. Gelb war begeistert von einem Demo-Tape M. Wards und ermöglichte ihm 2000 die Veröffentlichung seines Debüts Duet for Guitars #2 auf seinem Ow-Om-Label.
Projects. Gelb's approach to music is collaborative and he has recorded with a number of side projects. In a 2004 interview with Gelb, The Guardian wrote "Gelb's way of dealing with it was to treat Giant Sand (not to be confused with his 1970s electro-rock band Giant Sandworms) as a loose, uncompetitive, mutually supportive musical collective, a place for friends to hang out and play.
Duets for Guitars #2 and End of Amnesia (1999–2001) Ward's solo debut, Duet for Guitars #2, was released by Co-Dependent Records in 1999, then reissued by Howe Gelb's Ow Om record label in 2000.
