Schon mit 14 Jahren hatte Jack Clayton als Laufbursche für Filmstudios gearbeitet, bevor er 1939 zu einer Filmeinheit der Royal Air Force kam. 1944 drehte er mit "Naples is a Battlefield" (Neapel ist ein Schlachtfeld) seinen ersten Kurzfilm, der später ins New Yorker Museum of Modern Art gelangte.
