Carolina Shout. October 18, 1921 Session. Okeh 4495 is an iconic record in every sense. The James P. Johnson originals on both sides became staples of the stride piano tradition. The Carolina Shout B side, predating the recordings of Jelly Roll Morton and Earl Hines, can lay claim to being the first jazz piano solo on record.
