Molloy stammt aus einer Familie mit großer musikalischer Tradition. Mit acht Jahren begann er Flöte zu lernen und gewann bereits mit 17 das All-Ireland Flute Championship und erzielte erste Anerkennung im National Fleadh Cheoil and Oireachtas.
Matt Molloy (born 12 January 1947) is an Irish musician, from a region known for producing talented flautists. As a child, he began playing the flute and won the All-Ireland Flute Championship at nineteen.

Matt Molloy ( Ballaghaderreen ( County Roscommon ), 12 januari 1947) is een fluitist uit Ierland. Hij begon al op achtjarige leeftijd fluit te spelen en in zijn zeventiende levensjaar won hij het All Ireland Flute Championship. Hij was met Tommy Peoples een van de oprichters van The Bothy Band in 1975.
