The Zippers's debut album, The Inevitable (1995), received airplay on National Public Radio, and its second album, Hot (1996), was certified platinum. Hot was also one of the first enhanced CDs, containing an interactive presentation created by filmmaker Clay Walker .

Perennial Favorites is an album by the swing revival band Squirrel Nut Zippers, released in 1998. The album peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard 200. It achieved gold status.

Squirrel Nut Zippers. The ancestor of the Squirrel Nut Zipper was a caramel nut chew, made since 1888, called the Chocolate Squirrel caramel (think Milk Dud). It was a chocolate taffy said to have chewed beautifully. They were made for the first few years in Roxbury, Mass., by the Austin T. Merrill Co.
‘Nut Zippers’ is a southern term for a variety of old bootleg moonshine. There was a newspaper story about an intoxicated man who climbed a tree and wouldn’t come down—even after the police arrived. The headline for the story was Squirrel Nut Zipper and that newspaper headline became their name.
