The photographer had snapped her "stopping in the barn area to fondle her mount, Fathom." The rest of the paper was spotted with ugly war news and stories of "student unrest."

"The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved" is a seminal sports article written by journalist Hunter S. Thompson on the 1970 Kentucky Derby, which first appeared in Scanlan's Monthly in June of that year. The article marked the birth of what would become known as "gonzo journalism".
“The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved” By Hunter S. Thompson. From Scanlan’s, June 1970. Welcome to Derbytown. I GOT OFF the plane around midnight and no one spoke as I crossed the dark runway to the terminal. The air was thick and hot, like wandering into a steam bath.
The actor Tim Robbins captures Thompson’s burst-and-pause way of talking; Dr. John plays a boozy track hustler; singer Annie Ross plays a hotel clerk; and illustrator Ralph Steadman plays himself. The background music, though, comes from Bill Frisell.
