Vergleichsweise erfolglos war ihre Ostküstentournee 1932, wo sie vom Publikum schlecht aufgenommen wurden. Im Dezember 1932 nahmen sie in niedergeschlagener Stimmung heute legendäre Aufnahmen bei Victor auf (Toby, Moten Swing, Lafayette, Prince of Wales u. a.), bei denen Moten im Übrigen fehlte.
Moten continued to be one of Victor's most popular orchestras through 1930. Their song "Kansas City Shuffle" was recorded during this time. (The band recorded prolifically, and many of their records were issued in Victor's regular series, not specifically marketed to the Black community as some other bands were.)

The 1932 "Moten Swing", written by Bennie and Buster Moten, recorded at Camden, New Jersey, on December 13, 1932, gained much acclaim in the jazz community and is seen as an important jazz standard in the move towards a freer form of orchestral jazz.
