Jackie McLean belonged to the second generation of alto sax players who were greatly influenced by Charlie Parker, but it was not long before he found his own voice. His cohesive, solid phrasing and his distinct, harsh-like sonority would make him into one of the most representative jazzmen of a blues-full hard bop style.
