Er spielte zunächst in einigen lokalen Bands, bis er 1957 in Newcastle die Alan Price Rhythm & Blues Combo gründete. Nachdem Eric Burdon 1962 als Leadsänger dazu gekommen war, wurde die Band 1964, weil die Fans die Bühnenshow als „tierisch“ bezeichneten, in The Animals („Die Tiere“) umbenannt.
A self-taught musician, he was a founding member of the Tyneside group the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, which was later renamed the Animals. His organ playing on songs by the Animals, such as "The House of the Rising Sun", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", and "Bring It On Home to Me" was a key element in the group's success.

Various transmutations (via The Kontors – with Chas Chandler on bass) lead finally to The Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo. As the band prepared to infiltrate the London R&B scene in 1963, the name was changed to The Animals.
The Animals. Formed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Eric Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, the original line-up comprised Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums), and Bryan “Chas” Chandler (bass).
