The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture is located in New York’s Greenwich Village, in a complex of structures assembled over an extended period of time by the American sculptor and art collector Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875–1942).
The MFA programs, offered with concentrations in Painting or in Sculpture, continue the ethos of the teaching methods defined by the School’s history within a recognized degree program. The MFA is based on maintaining a full-time, rigorous studio practice.
Seeking to establish an art-education alternative to Pratt Institute, Matter’s wife Mercedes and a group of artists purchased the complex in 1967 to establish the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.
New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture. NYSS presents exhibitions in its historic gallery space, ranging from overviews of specific mediums, group & solo shows and retrospective surveys. The gallery showcases outstanding individuals who have not received due attention in NYC, and explores neglected aspects of well-known artists.
