Ende 1940 wirkte er beim legendären Konzert in Fargo, North Dakota mit. 1942, nach seinem Ausscheiden aus dem Ellington-Orchester zog er nach Los Angeles und arbeitete zeitweise mit einer eigenen Band, mit der er Etta Jones bei ihren Aufnahmen für Black & White Records begleitete.

The Duke in Boston. Back from a successful spring tour in Europe, Duke Ellington and his orchestra, riding a wave of popularity, played several major theater dates interspersed with one-nighters before opening at Boston’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel on July 24, 1939. It was a marvellous group.

Albany Leon Bigard. Clarinetist, Saxophonist, Bandleader. (1906 - 1980) Barney Bigard carried the influence of his birth city, New Orleans, throughout his career. He played tenor sax but later concentrated on clarinet, which he studied with Lorenzo Tio. In 1925 he was hired by King Oliver and moved to Chicago.
