He was eighty-eight. News of his death was announced by New York’s Pace Gallery, which had long represented him.
Robert Whitman (1935–2024) was a multimedia artist and a pioneer of Happening and Performance Art. He created immersive environments with sound, light, and objects, and collaborated with other avant-garde artists such as Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg.
