Symphony No. 2, Op. 19 Cello Concerto, Op. 22 ‘Medea’, Op. 23 ZARA NELSOVA, cello. New Symphony Orchestra, conducted by thè composer. iH. o. SAMUEL BARBER. Originally thè ‘Flight’ Symphony, Barber’s Second Symphony is as much a major work as thè splendid Cello Concerto, with thè greatly admired Zara Nelsova in thè solo part.
Symphony No. 2, Op. 19 is a three-movement work for orchestra by the American composer Samuel Barber. The 25-minute work was originally written in 1944. The work underwent many revisions and was finally published in 1950. The original manuscript was withdrawn by Barber in 1964.

31. Aug. 2010 · Barber: Orchestral Works Volume 2. Wendy Warner (cello) Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Marin Alsop. Wendy Warner concentrates on i [the Cello Concerto's] sometimes wry lyricism, and she articulates with brilliant point in the gentle scherzando passage of the finale.
The Cello Concerto was written for Raya Garbousova whose technical brilliance liberated Barber from accustomed constraint. The quality of the themes is better still and the luxurious nature of the piece may well be down to a freedom that he did not have with the writing of the Second Symphony.
