Dakar is a reissue of one side of the 16 + 2 ⁄ 3 rpm LP Baritones and French Horns (released in 1958), a portion of which was recorded on April 20, 1957 (the same day Dakar was recorded), and which was a session led by Pepper Adams and Cecil Payne on which Coltrane was a sideman.
With the interestingly contrasted baritone saxophonists Cecil Payne and Pepper Adams, and a rhythm section of great smoothness and swing, Dakar is a gem in the Coltrane discography. with Cecil Payne, Pepper Adams, Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins, Arthur Taylor.

Cecil Payne (December 14, 1922 – November 27, 2007) was an American jazz baritone saxophonist born in Brooklyn, New York. Payne also played the alto saxophone and flute. He played with other prominent jazz musicians, in particular Dizzy Gillespie and Randy Weston, in addition to his solo work as bandleader.
