Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de l'Aulne (/ t ʊər ˈ ɡ oʊ / toor-GOH; French:; 10 May 1727 – 18 March 1781), commonly known as Turgot, was a French economist and statesman. Sometimes considered a physiocrat, he is today best remembered as an early advocate for economic liberalism.

He began formal theological training in 1743, anticipating a career in the church. As a young scholar at the Sorbonne (1749 – 1751) he showed brilliant promise in several writings on the philosophy of history.
