Between 1927 and 1931, they were one of the most popular African American bands. Many of their records for Victor were bestsellers. In 1927, Fletcher Henderson 's arranger and saxophone player Don Redman was invited to become the Cotton Pickers' musical director [2] and he assembled a band.

Bekannt wurde die Band unter der Leitung von Don Redman, der 1927 das Fletcher-Henderson-Orchester verließ, um bis 1931 der musikalische Leiter der Cotton Pickers zu bleiben. Unter seiner Leitung galt die Band neben Duke Ellington und Fletcher Henderson als wichtigster Vorbereiter des Swing.
