Avner Dorman, Associate Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Sunderman Conservatory, structured Letters from Gettysburg around Lt. Cady’s deathbed reflections, and framed them with words of unconditional love penned by his mother.
Rounding out the disc are two other works by Dorman, in collaboration with Orli and Gil Shaham: a set of three temperamental Intermezzos for piano, and "Nigunim," a virtuoso violin sonata founded on aspects of Jewish religious melody.
In his piece Letters from Gettysburg (Canary Classics), Israeli composer Avner Dorman sets this correspondence to music written for mixed chorus, baritone, soprano, and a top notch group of percussionists. The soldier’s words are unsurprisingly touching — in Dorman’s hands they become excruciating.

When Avner Dorman was commissioned by Gettysburg College, where he teaches composition, to write a work commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War battle that was fought in the school’s vicinity, he decided to look for street-level realism rather than poetic artistry.
