Main Pedagogical Institute. In 1786, for teacher training in public schools in Saint Petersburg, a teacher's seminary was established, renamed in 1803 in a teacher's gymnasium, and in 1804 it was named the Pedagogical Institute and was placed in the building of the Twelve Colleges.
The Main Pedagogical Institute (where Dmitri Mendeleev studied) was restored in 1828 as an educational institution independent of Saint Petersburg University, and trained teachers until it was finally closed in 1859.
On 8 February 1819, the decree of Emperor Alexander I reorganized the Main Pedagogical Institute into St Petersburg University which was actually a renaming — the University regained its historical name. This was the end of the initial period of organization and development of the University in St Petersburg.
MAIN PEDAGOGICAL INSTITUTE is an institution of higher education for training teachers for secondary schools and for state and private institutions of higher education. The institute dates back to the Teachers' Seminary established in 1786 and transformed into the Pedagogical Institute in 1804.
Nicholas I of Russia ordered the transfer of the entire building of the Twelve Collegia to St Petersburg University and the Main Pedagogical Institute. The solemn act of opening the University in the reconstructed premises of the Twelve Collegia building took place in March 1838.
Alexander I of Russia approved the project drawn up by the trustee of the St Petersburg educational district Sergey Uvarov on the restoration of the University in St Petersburg through the transformation of the Main Pedagogical Institute. This act finally made the University as part of the system of the Ministry of National Education.
