Hal Galper studierte erst 1945 bis 1948 klassisches Klavier, wechselte aber zum Jazz, den er von 1955 bis 1958 am Berklee College of Music studierte. Während dieser Zeit erhielt er auch von Jaki Byard und Herb Pomeroy privaten Unterricht.
Galper’s 21st century series of trio albums for Origin Records incorporates his development of “Rubato” playing as a means of melding melodic lyricism with the rhythmic excitement and “sound of surprise” of the bebop tradition. The adventurousness and technical brilliance of Hal Galper’s artistry have made him one of the busiest and most admired pianists in modern jazz.
