Gavan Whelan was the original drummer in James from their inception through to his departure in late 1988. Older James fans still remember him fondly for his great energy and enthusiasm and his peerless mastery of the drums and sonic contributions to the early James sound.
Formation and early releases: 1982–1987. James were formed in 1982 in Whalley Range, Manchester, when Paul Gilbertson persuaded his friend Jim Glennie to buy a bass guitar and form a band with him. Their line-up solidified when Gavan Whelan joined on drums.
