It's likely that Landau's work with Browne and Lindley on The Pretender played a role in getting Lindley on board for the Darkness sessions a year later. It also was during this period that Landau met Chuck Plotkin, then the head of A&R at Asylum, who later became a key member of Springsteen's production team on Darkness and future albums.
