The University of Nairobi (uonbi or UoN; Swahili: Chuo Kikuu cha Nairobi) is a collegiate research university based in Nairobi and is the largest university in Kenya. Although its history as an educational institution dates back to 1956, it did not become an independent university until 1970.

The University of Nairobi (UoN), based in Kenya’s capital, is the oldest and largest university in the country. It was first founded as the Royal Technical College in 1956 and, after a number of transformations and name changes, in 1970 it became known as the university it is today.
