Fourteen years after the establishment of the Chair, the Elder Conservatorium of Music was set up in 1898 following a bequest of £65,000 to the University of Adelaide on the death of Sir Thomas Elder, £20,000 of which was to the School of Music. Professor Ives became the Director,with dual responsibility for the theory and practice of music.
