Er wurde in Abwesenheit im Nürnberger Prozess gegen die Hauptkriegsverbrecher als eine von 24 Personen angeklagt, am 1. Oktober 1946 in zwei von drei Anklagepunkten schuldig gesprochen und zum Tode durch den Strang verurteilt. Jahrzehntelang hielt sich das Gerücht, Bormann sei die Flucht ins Ausland gelungen.
