Von 1967 bis 1968 nahm die Band die Alben Rare Junk und Alive auf und lebte für vier Monate im Whitman National Forest in Oregon, um bei den Dreharbeiten für den Western Westwärts zieht der Wind mit Clint Eastwood und Lee Marvin mitzuwirken.

Rare Junk is the third studio album from The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, released in 1968. In an attempt to update their sound the band included electric instrumentation on the record, but it still was a commercial failure.
Alive is the 1969 album from The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Liberty Records released this album after the original version of the band broke up and before the next version of the band re-signed with them.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) is an American country rock band formed in 1966. The group has existed in various forms since its founding in Long Beach, California. Between 1976 and 1981, the band performed and recorded as the Dirt Band. Constant members since the early times are singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmie Fadden.
