Joseph Anthony Buttigieg II (/ ˈ b uː t ə dʒ ə dʒ / BOOT-ə-jəj; May 20, 1947 – January 27, 2019) was a Maltese-American Marxist literary scholar and translator. He served as William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of English at the University of Notre Dame until his retirement in 2017, when he was named professor emeritus .

Joseph Buttigieg, who taught English at Notre Dame and translated Gramsci's Prison Notebooks, died at 71. He was the father of Pete Buttigieg, who announced his candidacy for the 2020 US presidency.
