- The School
The Joseph Rowntree Village Trust maintains the model village of New Earswick, built by the Quaker organisation. It is analogous to Bournville and the Cadbury family, who were also Quakers. The village of Earswick is on the other side of the A1237 and the river, to the north-east. The primary school opened in 1912.

Welcome to our website and thank you for your interest in The Joseph Rowntree School. We are a successful 11-18 comprehensive school of over 1300 students, with over 200 students in the sixth form.
Starting Year 7 in September 2024. To make your application for a place at The Joseph Rowntree School, please complete your application anytime from 12th September up to the national application deadline day on 31st October.
Biological Sciences. Climbing Mount Improbable, The Greatest Show on Earth, The Evidence for Evolution, or The Selfish Gene, Richard Dawkins. The Single Helix, Steve Jones (A few years old now, so not fully up-to-date but still fascinating.) Darwin’s Island, Steve Jones.
In addition to the core curriculum taken by all students, The Joseph Rowntree School offers a wide range of GCSE and BTEC Options to students in KS4 to make up the remaining 40% of their timetable. We run a Guided Options Process during year 9, where pupils are placed onto one of three pathways (Orange/Purple/Green) for study across KS4.
