Mounting a defense of timid, inhibited, clumsy, and unsuccessful individuals, the three protagonists are a complete antithesis of the industrious heroes of socialist aesthetics. Martyrs of Love cemented Nemec’s reputation as the kind of unrestrained nonconformist the Communist establishment considered the most dangerous to their ideology.

Nemec and Krumbachová made Martyrs of Love the same year, a surreal depiction of thwarted love under bureaucratic control, but the ban on their previous film and the Soviet invasion effectively ended Nemec’s career as a Czechoslovak filmmaker, cutting him short in his early thirties.
