Mance Lipscomb (1895–1976) considered himself to be a Texas sharecropper and songster. He was the first artist recorded by Arhoolie, and the album—fittingly titled Texas Sharecropper and Songster —resulted in invitations to music festivals and additional recordings over the remainder of his life.
Lipscomb's strongly raw country blues based interpretations, are expression of his humble and hard life experiences as a sharecropper, but also carried the energetic and powerful spirit of the blues to the heart and soul of the listener. Published. sundazed Nov 09 2004.
