In den 1980er Jahren bewog ihn der Bassist Ray Brown zur Rückkehr in die Jazzszene. Er spielte darauf acht Jahre mit Browns Trio (unter anderem 1985 auch in Europa) und leitete eigene Gruppen, mit denen er regelmäßig Platten für Concord Records in einem aus Gospel, Blues und Hardbop gemischten Stil einspielte.
