Slash and Axl already had a conflict over the Snakepit songs and over the fact that Axl didn't want to write with Gilby (whom Slash liked), both of which led to Gilby's dismissal. Then Axl brought his guy, Paul, to write with the band. According to him it didn't mean that Paul would become a member.
