Clayton Prince (also known as Clayton Prince Tanksley) is an American actor and producer best known for his roles as Seaweed J. Stubbs in Hairspray (1988) and as Reuben Lawrence on the soap opera Another World.
Prince began acting at an early age. At 17, hea starred opposite of Robert Downey Jr. in a local production of American Passion. He made an appearance in The Cosby Show, before landing the role of Seaweed in John Waters' 1988 film, Hairspray.
After Hairspray, Prince went on to roles in Another World, JAG, Dark Justice, The Wayans Brothers, and more.
In 2005, Prince developed a show idea about a black music producer. In 2008, he pitched the idea to Lee Daniels at a Greater Philadelphia Film Office event in 2008, where Daniels was a judge. While Daniels showed interest in the idea, it was not produced by him.
Prince later went on to produce the show, entitled Cream, independently, releasing it on YouTube in 2013. He later remade Cream in 2017, where it was released on Amazon prime. Meanwhile, Lee Daniels released Empire in 2015, a show, coincidentally, about a black music producer.
Prince is currently working on a documentary about the Black Lives Matter protests that occurred during the summer of 2020 over the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others at the hands of police officers.
