È il pilota che detiene il record assoluto di vittorie alla Mille Miglia di velocità: 4 (1938, 1947, 1948 e 1949). Oltre alle 4 Mille Miglia fece sue anche 2 Targa Florio (1948, 1949).

Clemente was the only driver to win four Mille Miglia races: in 1938 and 1947 in an Alfa Romeo, in 1948 and 1949 in a Ferrari. In order, the co-pilots were: Stefani, Romano, Navone and Salani. Sardinian by birth and Florentine by adoption. He started out on two wheels and, in 1927, he moved on to car racing.
