Coppelia war das letzte Ballett von Saint-Léon und seine zweite Zusammenarbeit mit Léo Delibes, nachdem sie gemeinsam mit Léon Minkus 1866 das Ballett La Source geschaffen hatten, bei dem die beiden Komponisten jeweils die Hälfte der Partitur komponierten.

Dr. Coppélius is the wistful, lonely creator, a kind of magician, a sorcerer getting on in age, a crazy professor type – diagnosis: Frankenstein complex.
Coppélia was featured in the Danish film Ballerina, shown in two parts in the U.S. on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color in 1966 and later released theatrically in Europe. Dancer Kirsten Simone played the lead.
