Our theme deals with a beautiful young octoroon and her lover, who is the foreman of the turpentine still. The owner of the still, a man of Spanish descent, is a cruel, vindictive brute of little principle, and he, too, would be glad to win the favor of the girl. But she repulses him and in anger he attempts to wreak vengeance on her lover. But ...
The Octoroon is a play by Dion Boucicault that opened in 1859 at The Winter Garden Theatre, New York City. Extremely popular, the play was kept running continuously for years by seven road companies. [2] Among antebellum melodramas, it was considered second in popularity only to Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). Both were anti-slavery works.
