The Romance of Old Bill is a 1918 British silent comedy war directed by George Pearson and starring Charles Rock, Arthur Cleave and Hugh E. Wright. It was made at Twickenham Studios. It is based on the play The Better 'Ole, with the setting updated to the First World War.
The Better 'Ole, also called The Romance of Old Bill, is an Edwardian musical comedy with a book by Bruce Bairnsfather and Arthur Elliot, music by Herman Darewski, and lyrics by Percival Knight and James Heard, based on the cartoon character Old Bill, an infantryman, drawn by Bairnsfather.
A film of the same name was eventually produced. 'Old Bill', the cockney character illustrated here, was Bairnsfather's most famous cartoon invention. The title of the play, which Bairnsfather co-wrote, is based on Old Bill's well known quip 'If you know of a better 'ole go to it'.
