The Virtuous Sin is a 1930 American pre-Code comedy-drama film directed by George Cukor and Louis J. Gasnier and starring Walter Huston, Kay Francis, and Kenneth MacKenna. The screenplay by Martin Brown and Louise Long is based on the 1928 play The General by Lajos Zilahy.

Cukor adapts a Hungarian play to a fairy-tale Russian setting, with modern and unconventional characters. During the First World War a wife offers herself to a general in order to save her husband from the firing squad. In her search for freedom the young woman finds true love with the general.
Published November 2, 1930 in the New York Times. “THE Virtuous Sin,” the lurid title for the picturization of Lajos Zilahy’s play “The General,” which was at the Paramount, is a clever comedy with a splendid performance by Walter Huston, who appears as a Russian General-Gregori Platoff.
The Virtuous Sin tells the story of a scientist couple who get married despite the woman thinking of him as only a friend. When he is drafted into the army and gets himself in trouble with his commanding officer, she decides to try and seduce the general in hopes of getting him a reprieve.
