In 1891, in a small town in South Dakota, a stagecoach is robbed and the driver is killed. A small fortune in silver dollars has disappeared. The only suspect is Benjamin 'Benjie' Galt, the son of Sheriff Samuel 'Sam' Galt.
Benji, the son of a town sheriff (Sterling Hayden), stands trial for the murder of a stagecoach driver and the theft of its loot. Meanwhile, Hayden hurriedly traces down leads in an effort to exonerate him, all the while preparing for the reality that he may have to testify against his own kin.
