Carandiru ist die volkstümliche Bezeichnung für das Gefängnis Casa de Detenção de São Paulo im gleichnamigen Stadtteil im Norden von São Paulo. Von 1920 bis zum 16. September 2002 in Betrieb, hatte es zeitweise über 8000 Insassen und war damit die größte Haftanstalt Südamerikas.
Das bis 2002 betriebene Gefängnis, zeitweilig die größte Haftanstalt Südamerikas, war nach dem Stadtteil, in dem es sich befand, auch als Carandiru bekannt. Angehörige der Polizei des Bundesstaates töteten bei der Niederschlagung des Aufstands 111 Gefangene.
The Carandiru massacre (Portuguese: Massacre do Carandiru, Portuguese: [mɐˈsakɾi du kɐɾɐ̃dʒiˈɾu]) occurred on 2 October 1992, in Carandiru Penitentiary in São Paulo, Brazil, when military police stormed the penitentiary following a prison riot.
